We understand why you would feel nervous. In the past few months, COVID-19 has changed the way we think and the way we practice. Now, we have to face the “new normal”. Our top priority has always been patient safety. Moving forward we added extra measures and strict infection control steps to ensure that your visit with us is as safe and comfortable as it can be. These recommendations are based on guidelines set out by dental regulatory authorities, Public Health Ontario, and IPAC consulting (Infection Prevention and Control). For more information about the new protocols we have added, please click here.
Prior to your scheduled appointment, we pre-screen for COVID-19 over the phone. If a patient answers “yes” to any of the questions asked, we will not be able to see them in our clinic. We also require all patients to fill and sign a COVID-19 screening consent form before treatment. Patients can email us their consent form the day before their appointment or bring it in the day of. Prior to treatment, each patient’s temperature will be taken using an infrared thermometer.
In order to maintain physical distancing, we request all patients to wait in their car or in the hallway until we advise them to enter our office. We are also scheduling appointments strategically to minimize the number of people in the clinic at one time. All chairs in the waiting room are arranged to adhere to physical distancing guidelines. We are restricting visitors to those who are essential and limiting family members attending with patients.
To protect our staff and patients, we are ensuring that every staff member is using the appropriate personal protective equipment. This includes fitted N95 masks and or equivalent, face shields, safety glasses, disposable gowns, disposable shoe covers, and hair caps which will all be changed for each patient.
Operatory Cleaning
Prior to a patient being seated in a treatment room, all surfaces are disinfected with hospital approved disinfectant wipes. As an added measure, we have included a new disinfectant spray which is NSF (a public health and safety organization), Environmental Protection Agency, and hospital approved for the use against COVID-19. After dismissing every patient, an electrostatic sprayer will be used to apply the disinfectant to all surfaces. The use of electrostatic sprayer will allow the disinfectant to wrap around all conductive surfaces and effectively disinfect the whole operatory. By doing this we can perform “an enhanced, terminal cleaning” of each operatory after every use. This process is widely known as “deep cleaning.” As well, all waterlines and suction lines are purged between patients with GOBBLE solution.
Instrument Sterilization
All instruments have gone through proper sterilization and inspection prior to use. Instruments are kept in cassettes and go through a cleaning and enzymatic bath. After the rinsing, drying, and visual inspection process, the instruments are placed in sealed pouches and sterilized. We follow the sterilization process recommended by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, and Public Health Infection Control Guidelines. This sterilization process has always been monitored to ensure proper disinfection and to avoid sterilization failure.
If a patient suspects they have been exposed to COVID-19 or is waiting for test results, the patient will not be able to schedule an appointment. If a patient screens positive for COVID-19, we will be able to see them on an emergency basis only.
We are restricting visitors to those who are essential and limiting family members attending with patients. However, if you need assistance, please inform us before your appointment so we can make arrangements.
As a building with many offices for government services and corporations, adherence to strict infection control practices are followed. Bentall Green Oak, the buildings management company, continues to take the necessary precautions for infection control. This includes numerous hand sanitizer stations in the lobby, restricted number of people per elevator at a time, thorough and frequent cleaning of the lobby and washrooms, and configuring the lobby to adhere to social distancing.
For those who prefer to drive, we have two designated parking spots reserved for patients of the office. However, we anticipate there will be more access to additional parking spots as government and corporate employees in the building continue to work from home. The office is also accessible by public transit, with the Finch subway entrance located in the building.
Your dental experience and safety have always been our top priorities. We promise to continue providing you with exceptional care and high-quality services. By adding and updating our infection control protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain committed to delivering the safest possible dental experience. We are following the recommendations set out by dental regulatory authorities, Public Health Ontario, and IPAC consulting (Infection Prevention and Control). Practising good dental hygiene and following healthy lifestyle habits is more important than ever. There are five simple things you should be doing daily to keep your smile clean and safe from decay and disease.
1. Brush your teeth twice daily for two full minutes each session.
2. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush.
3. Floss every single day. If not possible consider using soft picks as an alternative.
4. Daily use of alcohol-free mouth rinse is highly recommended.
5. Try to limit your consumption of processed or sugary foods and beverages.
